This module highlights the distinctive needs of an individual with a stoma as they age from neonate, baby, child through to adolescence, along with exploring the needs of immediate care givers/parents and their role within this journey.

Small bowel transplantation, ACE, Urodynamics and Mitrofanoff, along with Inflammatory Bowel Disease in childhood are just a few of the specialist topics that will be taught by clinical experts from Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The legal and ethical considerations will be examined, as well as reviewing the special needs of children living with a stoma when they go to school.

LBR7463 Level 7 – (20 credits/Master level)

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to:

• Be a postgraduate nurse working with children with a stoma
• Have attained a degree at 2:2 level or above
• Complete a 500 word critique of an article
• Attend all six formal study days as details below
• Produce a portfolio of practice-based learning including reflection and a critical analysis

Level 7 Master’s learning outcomes:

• Critically review and translate current practice guidelines and research to assess the needs of the patient and their family.
• Appraise current practice guidelines and research to critically reflect on your delivery of holistic care.
• Critically evaluate the legal and ethical issues associated with the patient and their family to support them and to meet their specific needs.
• Justify evidence-based resources which support health and well-being and prevent adverse effects for patients, and their families.

LBR6511 Level 6 – (20 credits/Degree level)

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to:

• Be postgraduate nurses working and have regular access to children
• Attend all six formal study days as details below
• Produce a portfolio of practice-based learning including reflection and a critical analysis

Level 6 learning outcomes:

• The learning outcomes are very similar to Level 7 (see above) but reflect degree level learning skill.
